Amte Couple Chosen for this year's Magsaysay Award
More than thirty years after Baba Amte won the Ramon Magsaysay award for public service, his son Prakash Amte and daughter-in-law Mandakini have been chose to receive the prestigious award for community leadership.
Prakash had left his lucrative practice and following the footsteps of his father, set up a hospital for the Madia Gond tribals, in the thick forests of Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.
The doctor couple were awarded, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation says, for "enhancing the capacity of Madia Gonds to adapt positively in today's India, through healing and teaching andother compassionate interventions".
Prakash Amte is also know for his love for wild life and nature. He has set up his camp at Hemalkasa, about 350 km from Nagpur.
